  • Enable children to grow up within their own families
  • Prevent family breakdown
  • Protect and keep children safe
  • Prevent children’s names being placed on the child protection register
  • Support families to enable de-registration of children whose names are on the child protection register
  • Support the process of family reunification where a child has become looked after and the plan is for a return home.

The desired outcomes for the Service are be to improve the parenting skills of parents undertaking the programme so that they are better able to meet the needs of their child and for these improvements to be sustained over a period of time.

Tuesday 30th September: 11.15am-12.30pm
Family Circle, Tros Gynnal

Family Circle is a project of the children’s charity Tros Gynnal and works with children and their families to facilitate Family Group Meetings.

Family Group Meetings (originally called Conferences) were developed in New Zealand and have their origins in the culture of the Maori people.

Family Group Meetings are an innovative method of making plans and decisions regarding children and young people. They require that families assume a responsible and powerful role in deciding how to meet their child’s needs. It is for each family to create their own plan and the plan they make will be unique. Family is taken in it’s widest sense and includes anyone in the extended family and friends network.

Research suggests overall, positive outcomes associated with Family Group Meetings, with families tending to reach more creative solutions to their difficulties than those proposed by professionals.

Tuesday 30th September: 2.00pm-3.15pm
Carmarthen-shire Dragon Bus

The Dragon Bus is a double decker bus which has been converted into an attractive and exciting venue, used in both urban and rural communities across Carmarthenshire.

The bus visits families in targeted communities, offering play opportunities for young children so that they may learn and develop, as well as supporting parents with childcare and other needs, and reducing isolation in rural areas. Informal courses are offered for parents/carers, and they are encouraged to make links with any longer term facilities in their local area.

The beauty of a mobile provision is that it can visit almost anywhere, and the service is not confined to suitability or availability of existing building based premises within communities.

Wednesday 1st October: 11.30am-12.45pm
Neville Street Barnardos Project

The Neville Street Service offers a range of supports to vulnerable and disadvantaged children and families from BME communities in Cardiff. The support services offered include Stay & Play sessions and Family Workshops for pre-school children and their parents, after school activities for older children, Girls’ Group for teenage girls and Family Support to children and families referred by the Local Authority. All of the services are underpinned by the provision of language support via an Interpreter Service which currently covers 19 community languages.
