Site Visit: Family Circle, Tros Gynnal

Family Circle is a project of the children’s charity Tros Gynnal and works with children and their families to facilitate Family Group Meetings.

Family Group Meetings (originally called Conferences) were developed in New Zealand and have their origins in the culture of the Maori people.

Family Group Meetings are an innovative method of making plans and decisions regarding children and young people. They require that families assume a responsible and powerful role in deciding how to meet their child’s needs. It is for each family to create their own plan and the plan they make will be unique. Family is taken in it’s widest sense and includes anyone in the extended family and friends network.

Research suggests overall, positive outcomes associated with Family Group Meetings, with families tending to reach more creative solutions to their difficulties than those proposed by professionals.

Site Visit: Carmarthenshire Dragon Bus

The Dragon Bus is a double decker bus which has been converted into an attractive and exciting venue, used in both urban and rural communities across Carmarthenshire.

The bus visits families in targeted communities, offering play opportunities for young children so that they may learn and develop, as well as supporting parents with childcare and other needs, and reducing isolation in rural areas. Informal courses are offered for parents/carers, and they are encouraged to make links with any longer term facilities in their local area.

The beauty of a mobile provision is that it can visit almost anywhere, and the service is not confined to suitability or availability of existing building based premises within communities.
